How to Kneeboard

Alicia Stott asked:

Summer time is one of the best times to play sports. Many people like to go to the lake or the beach and go out in the water to play around. One of the best things to do in the water is to kneeboard. For those of you who don't know kneeboarding is almost like wake boarding, but on your knees. You kneel on a board, across the water, while holding a rope that's connected to the boat. The object is to stay up and try and do any types of tricks you can. I have been doing knee boarding since I was probably 12 or 13 and I have become pretty good at it as well. On my dad's boat I'm known as the kneeboarding "teacher." Every time someone new comes on the boat they say, "We brought you a new student today." That's what I'm going to do today is give you some tips on how to kneeboard.

• The first thing you need to do is put on a life jacket. When it comes to going out in the water, safety always comes first. Make sure the life jacket fits you well and is tight enough that you can't slip out of it. Also, be aware of the signals. The signals are: a little faster, a little slower, it's wavy (meaning there are big waves coming, be prepared) and stop (cut it).

• Second, is to grab the rope you are using to pull you along and find somewhere on the boat to tie it to. Normally you will tie it to one of the hooks on the back of the boat or one in the middle if there is one. Stick the rope through the middle of the hook then latch it on so it goes over the top and bottom of the hook.

• Third, jump in the water and once you get in, dunk your board under water so it gets wet. You want your board to be wet from the water so it's easier to get up on. Once your board is wet you are going to lie on it. Don't put your whole body on the board; make it so that half your body is on the board and the have your legs dangling. Hold the rope so your elbows are on the board, like you're going to lift a weight and do a curl.

• Fourth, when the boat starts to move you're going to feel a big pull. When it starts to pull you, take the rope and pull it back towards you and use your elbows to slide your knees up into the knee pockets. Your elbows are what are going to get you up. Use your forearms and elbows and slide your knees in. If you are a little bit stronger you can hold the rope with one hand and use your other hand to hold the board.

• Fifth, once you're kneeling on the board the next thing to do is to strap yourself in. On the board there is a strap so your knees won't come out when you're up, but you slide out when you fall. Strap yourself in as tightly as you need to.

• Sixth, make sure you keep holding onto that rope. The rope at points will pull away from you and you will feel like it's going to fall. When that happens, take both hands and pull it back towards you. When you do this it will give you some slack.

• Seventh, remember at all times to lean back. You don't want to lean to far back because you will be off balance and fall. But you also don't want to lean to far forward or you will do a nose dive. You want to lean just a little back. When the waves come, make sure you really lean back.

Kneeboarding can be a lot of fun once you learn to get up. It sometimes takes a few tries, but you will get it. Never give up. I always say, once you get up for the first time, you will get up every time. Go out and have fun with it. Once you master getting up try doing spins or some tricks. It's a lot of fun when you have another person going with you because then you can try and push each other off, splash each other and just have laughs about it. Go out and try knee boarding!

How to get air on a kneeboard?

take it easy asked:

Do you need a raised rope? Plus I go kneeboarding on the beach so it's not the flattest water. I have no lakes around me since I live on Long Island. I have a Waverunner so I obviously can't use a raised rope.

Knee Boarding Tips For Beginners – Deep Water Starts

Nicola Kennedy asked:

Being new to the sport of kneeboarding it's really hard to start off especially if you are a beginner. As an introduction to 'boat-towed' sport, a kneeboard is a great piece of equipment to practice with. The low center of gravity often makes it easier to get up on than a water ski or wakeboard, which both require standing up.

Here are two ways to do a deepwater kneeboard start, the belly start and the low buoyancy start.

The Belly Start

o The most common kneeboard start is the belly start or abdomen start. In performing this, you should put down your belly on the board with the strap laying forward and pointing towards the nose of the board.

o The nose of the board should be sticking out of the water. Place your one hand on the side of the board and the other hand grasping the rope and on holding the other side of the board.

o As the boat starts moving pull your knees ahead into the padded knee wells on the board. And as you do this, try not to bend forward, and keep your weight back.

o When you feel balanced, let go of the rope with your one hand, and with the other hand pull the strap up over your knees and tighten the strap to where it feels secure. Keep your arms extended and slightly bent.

The Low Buoyancy Start

o A low buoyancy kneeboard is one that is very thin, and while you are waiting in the water it will sink slightly into the water when you put your body weight to it. This allows you to go ahead to fasten yourself into the board before the boat pulls you up.

o It is easier if you adjust the strap to your preferred fit before you get into the water. This can be done on the swim platform or on a flat spot in the boat. You just simply get on the board and adjust the length to where it slides comfortably over you knees.

o After the strap is adjusted, jump in the water with the board. Apply weight to the board by pressing down with your elbows, and with your hands on the board in the same position as described in the belly start, pull your knees up on the board and below the strap.

o This start requires less effort when the boat is pulling you out of the water and also it requires a lot of balance before the boat starts moving. You need to balance yourself to keep the board from flipping over while you are strapped in it as you wait to be pulled out of the water. Balancing in the knee board can be best achieved by moving your arms back and forth in the water as if you were treading water.

o You should remain in that position; keep your balance with the nose of the board pointing slightly out of the water. As the boat starts moving bend back and you should pop out of the water with ease. This is the time to tighten the strap if needed. Keep your arms extended and slightly bent.

Kneeboard Tricks

When it was first introduced, kneeboarding itself was some sort of trick until people started doing it more and more, and now they have come up with a huge amount of kneeboard tricks. Like with skateboarding and bicycling, the time for kneeboard tricks arrived and it still happening today.

There are kneeboard tricks from the easiest to the hardest. The tricks you can perform tell others if you are a beginner or a veteran kneeboarder. Before going further with explanations about these tricks, the first thing to remember is to keep your grip very, very tight - as tight as you can - while doing any tricks.

The most basic trick of them all, but still hard if you look at it, is called the belly start. As the name suggests, you start with your belly being laid flat on the kneeboard. Unfortunately that’s the only easy part of this basic trick, as after that it gets much more complicated. From lying flat on your stomach on your kneeboard, you have to change to a squatting position while still not losing your grip on your rope - and you have to do it at the time you start being pulled and the nose of your kneeboard has to be above water. You have to be fast at switching from lying on your stomach to squatting, and the squat has to be done so that you put your knees inside the knee pads of your kneeboard. Hang on - it’s almost over once you have managed to place knees inside the knee pads.  You also have to make sure that you are leaning backwards and that your weight is properly distributed.

As you can see the basic trick is really not so basic, but when you look at the advanced tricks, you’ll understand that this basic one is a piece of cake compared to the advanced ones. The advanced ones include spinning and doing all sorts of crazy stunts. Some will get you slightly beneath the water, while others will have you slightly above water, but always keep in mind not to delay your kneeboarding fun by falling in the water. Grab those ropes as tight as you can.

As with everything else in life, be it physical activity or mental activity, both things have something in common and that is to keep practicing. If you fall into the water, swim to the shore, take a deep breath and get back on your kneeboard with the more determination that you will accomplish the desired trick this time around, even if it is your hundredth time. Just keep trying, if you are truly interested in doing all sorts of crazy fun tricks with your kneeboard, you can’t give up, there’s no quitting. The only reason to give it all up, to quit and to go home is if you aren’t serious about it and if you aren’t really interested in kneeboarding. If you truly want to achieve something, no matter how impossible it may seem, as long as you really want it and as long as you give it everything you have, you will succeed.

How to Kneeboard Instructional

When it comes to any sport, including kneeboarding, to start is the most difficult part. After you figure out all the basics, everything will be much easier. The advanced stuff will be more accessible for you to understand once you have understood the basic principles on which everything else, no matter how advanced, is based on. The following text will try to teach you to better understand the basics of kneeboarding.

There are two starting points for someone who is just starting kneeboarding. The popular ones are the deepwater start, the beach start and the dock start. The easiest is the deepwater start. It shouldn’t be too difficult for anyone to start kneeboarding by using the deepwater start. If you happen to have issues with any of the methods to start kneeboarding, then get a kneeboard that has a hydro hook on its nose, because it will definitely get you kneeboarding in no time. It doesn’t even require any prior experience.

To start the deepwater start, you first have to lie down flat on your kneeboard while having your legs straight at the back. Now hold the rope with both of your hands and while doing that pull yourself up on both of your elbows. From that position get yourself up nice and slowly by pulling yourself onto your knees. When you manage to achieve this position, you can put the strap around your thighs. Also make sure that that the boat is going quite slowly, around 15-20mph, while you’re getting into your position.

Now, if you have managed to do that, everything else will be much easier. Not right away, but eventually, like when you manage to do the deepwater start faster and easier, it will mean that you have finally passed the beginner level. It will be easier to understand what is needed to achieve and move to the advanced level. You will eventually need a better kneeboard for advanced tricks and stunts. The best thing to do after getting good at one start is to start figuring out the next type of start, and the next, and as you will see, every one of the starts has its own reputation as to why it’s hard. After you have managed to be very proficient in all the starts, and once that you managed to acquire confidence, you can start learning all the tricks that kneeboarding has to offer. Experiment with various tricks, but do practice safety while doing so, and especially if it your own trick that you are trying to learn to impress your friends.

The thing to take in consideration here is to remember that you are beginner.  You can read and watch many instruction videos for advanced kneeboarding and all that is great, but you probably won’t be able to understand all the points explained.  If you proceed with wrong or incomplete instructions, or misunderstood, then you could end up in a lot of trouble. So, just take baby steps, it will save you from a lot of trouble later.
